Men’s Interclub Teams Update – 3rd July

Last weekend, Skerries took on Headfort Golf Club in the men’s Junior Cup.  With a good blend of youth and experience, this team has made great strides this year. However, we were up against a strong Headfort team with 3 matches away and 2 at home.  With both sides taking 1 point each in Skerries, the overall result rested on the away team.  Headfort took the next point so the score went 2 :1. With Skerries up in both other matches, we were still hopeful we could win overall.  In the end, both matches finished all square after 18 holes.  With Headfort winning the 19th hole in the 1st play-off match, they secured their 3rd point and won the overall match. There are really fine margins in these matches and on this occasion, despite a tremendous effort by the players, we came out the wrong side of the play-offs.

Junior Cup Away Team : John O’Brien, Jeff Sexton and Zach Neary with President Peter Counihan, Vice Captain Ivan Cole, Caddies Ethan McGarry and Sonia Neary, and Junior Cup Team Manager Kingsley Lewis.

The men’s Committee would like to thank Kingsley Lewis and Brian Christie for the great work that they put into preparing and organising the Junior Cup team in 2025.  It has been particularly encouraging to see the young talent that has emerged through this campaign and we now have a great platform to progress further next year.

On Sunday 22nd June, Skerries played Westmanstown in the 3rd round of the Men’s Leinster Trophy.  This format is 7 singles matches and Skerries were drawn with 3 home matches and 4 away.  We had a very competitive match which was nip and tuck all the way. Having won 2 matches each, all rested on the final 3 matches.  These matches all went down to the wire but we narrowly lost 2 on the 18th and 1 on the 20th hole.  There was not much between the teams in the end.

Skerries Leinster Trophy Home Team: Cillian Wilde, Jamie Daly and Lucas Shannon with Team Manager Jim McDonnell

Leinster Cup Away team: Con Martin, John McDonnell, Paul Wilde and Paul O’Loughlin

The men’s committee would like to thank Jim McDonnell for the work that he did with the Leinster Trophy panel and in particular, the encouragement of the young talent in the club.

The last few years, we have been bringing many of our upcoming Juniors into the Interclub teams.  These boys have been a credit to Skerries golf club and have added a freshness to our teams.  The feedback that we have received from opposing teams has been highly complimentary to our Juniors.  It is also worth mentioning how our own more experienced members have embraced and encouraged young players in all our team panels and bodes well for a bright future for Interclub golf in Skerries.

This weekend, the men’s Barton Cup team will take on Malahide on Saturday at 15:30 with 3 matches at home and 2 away.  If you are around, we would be delighted to see you come out and support the team.  Alternatively, keep up-to-date on live scoring at  https://club.smartgolfsystems.com/interclub/skerries .
