Men’s Interclub Teams Update – 28th May

Last weekend we had a busy schedule of matches with Skerries taking on Howth in the Junior Cup, Dundalk in the Mixed Fourball and Sutton in the McDonnell Cup.

Our Junior Cup team had a great victory over Howth with a 3-2 win.  Leading the way in Skerries, two of our talented juniors (Calvin Kinsella and Jacob Cardiff) delivered 2 tremendous wins in the home matches.  With Howth winning 2 of their 3 matches at home, we needed one final point for victory.  John O’Brien showed all his experience in grinding out a 2 and 1 victory.  Well done to Kingsley Lewis and the team on a great win.  Next up we play Black Bush on 8th June.

In the Irish Mixed Fourball, we played a very strong Dundalk team in extremely tough conditions.  This was the first time that Skerries entered this competition.  With Dundalk winning their home matches, the Skerries home team fought hard to get to a play-off.  Liz McHugh and Neil Monaghan won their match 3&2 and so it all came down to the last match in Skerries with Sonia Neary and Austin Gill.  Sonia held a great putt on 15 followed by a birdie on 16 to put Skerries 1 Up with 2 to play.  However, Dundalk fought back on 17 and only needed a half on the 18th to win overall.  Despite a valiant effort by Sonia and Austin, Dundalk won the final match with a par on the 18th.  Hard luck to the team on losing a tight match.  Well done to Liz McHugh on delivering a win on her first occasion representing Skerries in Interclub golf.  Liz only started playing through the Women of Golf programme, 18 months ago.  What a fantastic achievement.  Many thanks to VC Ivan Cole and Bridgeen Coyle for all the work that they have put organising practice matches for the team.  We hope that we can build on this great work next year.

Also on Sunday, the men’s McDonnell Cup team played Sutton.  This is the first time that we played in this fourball format in a number of years.  We had a great match which was enjoyed by all the players.  However, it was not to be, and we lost 3-2.  Many thanks to Gerry Llyod and Wille Prendergast for stepping in a managing the Skerries Home and Away teams on the day.  It was invaluable on a busy day for interclub golf.

This weekend, the men’s Jimmy Bruen team take on Forest Little at 15:20.  If you are around, we would be delighted to see you come out and support the team.  Alternatively, keep up-to-date on live scoring at https://club.smartgolfsystems.com/interclub/skerries
