Interclub Teams Update 28th May
Thursday (21st May) saw the conclusion of the Mary McKenna Diamond Trophy with the second round of matches taking place in Skerries Golf Club. Once again, the occasion was graced by the presence of the legendary Mary McKenna herself.
Skerries faced a difficult task heading into the return matches, trailing 4–1 after the opening leg. Unfortunately, despite a determined effort, the matches did not go Skerries’ way on the day. Skerries secured victory in one match, while Donabate Golf Club won two matches to claim the overall victory, with the remaining matches called once the result was decided.
Attention then turned to Sunday’s rescheduled Intermediate Foursomes matches against County Louth Golf Club, which had originally been postponed due to flooding the previous weekend.
Having already secured one and a half points from the earlier fixtures, Skerries entered the day in a strong position, but both matches proved to be extremely close and tense affairs. In the opening match, Skerries showed tremendous resolve, winning the final three holes under immense pressure to secure a valuable half point. The second match was a ding-dong battle throughout, with Skerries eventually going one up on the 17th hole before halving the 18th to secure the victory.
That result gave Skerries Golf Club an overall 3–1 victory which makes them progress to the next round, where they will face Knightsbrook Golf Club before June 7th.
Also on Sunday, Skerries’ Ladies Junior Cup team secured an excellent victory against Forrest Little Golf Club.
With three matches away from home, a crucial point was earned in the first away match on the 18th hole. Back in Skerries, tensions were high throughout the home ties. One home match was safely secured, while the decisive match went all the way to the 18th green, where Skerries clinched victory in dramatic fashion. It was another extremely close and tense contest, but a fantastic win for the Skerries side, who now advance to face Howth Golf Club in the next round before June 14th.
Monday saw the beginning of the Fingal Ladies Senior Foursomes League campaign, with two matches at home in Skerries Golf Club and two away in Sutton Golf Club.
Skerries, managed by Marion Bentley and assisted by Geraldine Neary ,secured a valuable half in Sutton to earn one point, while two impressive victories at home saw Skerries collect four more points. Overall, a strong return of five points from a possible eight was secured in the opening round.
Skerries now look ahead to the next league fixture against Howth Golf Club on Monday, June 8th.

The men’s Barton Shield team played Donabate away on Sunday 24th May. Both matches were nip and tuck all the way with a very high standard of golf on display by both team. Skerries won the first match 1 up on the 18th. In the second match, Donabate secure a win on the 17th to go 3 up resulting in a overall win for Donabate. Hard luck to Paul S Byrne, Paul Byrne and the team for a closely fought contest. Attention now turns to the Senior Cup agains Westmanstown on Sunday 7th June.
Also on Sunday, Skerries played Malahide in the Men’s McDonnell Cup. With 3 matches away and 2 at home it was always a tough ask. The team put in a valiant effort and were in good position with our home matches. However, Malahide secured the points in their 3 matches in Malahide giving them the overall match victory. Hard luck gentlemen and thank you for representing Skerries golf club. A big thank you to Willy Prendergast and Seamus Garrigan for managing both the McDonnell Cup and Men’s Leinster Fourball in 2026.
