Interclub update May 14th
Last weekend proved to be an exceptionally busy and exciting one for Skerries Golf Club, with several inter-club teams in action and plenty of drama right to the very last putt.
Ladies Minor Foursomes v The Island
On Saturday, May 9th, the Ladies Minor Foursomes team took on The Island in what proved to be a very enjoyable and keenly contested encounter. Despite some excellent golf and great determination from the Skerries side, The Island emerged victorious on this occasion. Well done to all involved for their tremendous effort and sportsmanship throughout the matches. The team was managed by Pauline Gaughran and Liz McHugh.
Men’s Leinster Trophy v Balbriggan
Also on Saturday, Skerries played Balriggan in the Men’s Leinster Trophy. This team, managed Neil Monaghan and Willie Prendergast, was made up of men and junior boys in the 8.5+ HI category. With 7 singles matches, Balbriggan were first to get points on the board. Skerries were up in 3 home matches when Balbriggan clinched their 4th point at home, giving them the overall victory. The managers would particularly like to acknowledge our junior boys (Jamie Daly, Lucas Shannon and Fionn Larkin) who did the club proud in pressure matchplay singles. It’s great to see more young talent playing in our men’s interclub teams.
Ladies Senior Foursomes v Co Louth
Sunday, May 10th brought further excitement as the Ladies Senior Foursomes team faced a challenging tie against County Louth. Managed by Fiona Farrell, with assistance from Mary Kenny and Ciara Boylan, the team produced a thrilling performance in a match that went right down to the wire.
Following a great win at home and an agonisingly narrow defeat away in one match, the outcome rested on the final match in County Louth. In a nail-biting finish, Maria Dunne and Gráinne O’Connor secured a magnificent victory for Skerries on the 19th hole, sealing an overall win for the team. Huge congratulations to all involved on a fantastic result, and we wish them every success in the next round.
Irish Mixed Foursomes v Clontarf
Also on Sunday, Skerries faced Clontarf in the Irish Mixed Foursomes competition. Managed by Brian Andrews and Liz McNamara, this tie was another extremely close affair. In Clontarf, both away matches ended in narrow defeats for Skerries. At home, the first pairing recorded an excellent victory, while the second match went all the way to the 18th hole before unfortunately finishing in favour of Clontarf. Despite the narrow loss overall, the team can take great pride in such a spirited and competitive performance.
Well done to all players, managers, and supporters who represented Skerries Golf Club so proudly over the weekend.
Upcoming Matches
On Saturday, May 16th at 3pm, Skerries will take on Sutton in the Challenge Cup. Managed by Maire Keogh, with two matches at home and two away the team will no doubt be looking forward to what promises to be a very competitive and exciting encounter. We wish Maire and all the players the very best of luck as they represent the club.
On Sunday, May 17th, the Intermediate Foursomes team will face Co.Louth in their latest outing. Managed by Liz McNamara assisted by Patricia Garry and Ann Ryan, this tie promises to be a closely contested affair, again with two matches at home and two away. With plenty of strong golf expected from both sides, it should make for another exciting day of inter-club competition.
Also on Sunday May 17th, the Men’s Leinster Fourball (managed by Willy Prendergast and Seamus Garrigan) play Donabate. This will be followed by the Men’s Junior Cup team (managed by Kingsley Lewis and Brian Christie) who play St Annes.
