Interclub Teams – Season Reflection
The 2024 season for skerries golf club’s interclub competitions presented a mix of challenges and opportunities for growth. While the club didn’t progress as far as hoped in many competitions, there were several close matches that demonstrated the team’s competitive spirit.
In terms of overall performance, Skerries GC narrowly missed advancing in several key events. The club faced tough play-off losses in the Irish Mixed, Jimmy Bruen, Pierce Purcell, and North Leinster Mixed competitions. While disappointing, this showcased the team’s ability to compete at a high level.
Despite the setbacks, the season brought numerous positive developments. One significant highlight was the inclusion of talented junior players in interclub teams where U18s were eligible. Young golfers were incorporated into the panels and teams for the Barton Cup, Jimmy Bruen, and Leinster Trophy competitions. This strategy is expected to contribute to the long-term development and success of Skerries GC’s teams in future years.
Another positive aspect was the provision of coaching sessions with the Club Professional for all teams. Players appreciated these opportunities to enhance their technical skills, with a emphasis on improving their short game.
The club also made strides in promoting team golf and fostering a stronger connection with the wider membership. Regular updates in the weekly newsletter kept members informed about interclub activities, aiming to increase interest and participation in team golf.
While the season’s results may not have met all expectations, the foundations laid for future success are evident. The integration of junior talent, professional coaching, and improved communication with the membership all point towards a bright future for Skerries GC’s interclub teams. Thank you to Geraldine Neary and Neil Monaghan, team captains and players for your commitment in organizing matches, practice sessions, and coaching during the 2024 season.
