Captains’-End-Of-Season-Update-Skerries-Golf-Club

Fellow Members,

As the year draws to a close, we would like to take this opportunity to reflect on the wonderful season we’ve shared and to express our thanks to everyone who made it so memorable for us.

To all our members, thank you for your support and participation throughout the year. To our committee members and all volunteers, we appreciate the time and effort you’ve given to the club. To our staff, your hard work and dedication does not go unnoticed. And to everyone who has played a round, shared a laugh, or joined in our events, we’re grateful for your contribution to making this a great year.

The last few months of the year have been full to the brim! We hope that the ‘Weekly Thursday Updates’ provided by Evelyn & Lydia, along with this newsletter, have kept you informed about everything that has taken place throughout the year.

Congratulations to all of our 2024 Winners – you will find the ‘Roll of Honour’ in the newsletter showcasing this year’s Majors & Monthly Medal Winners. Congratulations to this year’s Golfers of the Year Michael Branagan & Joanne Kinsella.

Our mixed competitions have been a highlight of the year, with strong participation in both golfing and social aspects. We look forward to concluding the season with a festive mixed event on December 14th and encourage all members and guests to join in. Our thanks to Hilda Cussen, Mary Paul Mulligan, Eadhbhard Mulligan, Mary Kenny, Ciara Boylan, Des Whyte, and Joe Hilliard.

The Lunar Golf event was a unique and successful night of golfing under the full Harvest moon. Golfers of all ages enjoyed the challenge of playing on an illuminated course. Special thanks to the junior members who helped set up and take down the lighting.

Many of you participated in competitions with great effort and enthusiasm, proudly representing our club. Whether in our internal tournaments or interclub matches, the sportsmanship and commitment displayed by our members have been a pleasure to witness. Thank you to all of the team captains and this years overall team managers Neil Monaghan & Geraldine Neary.

We were also fortunate to host renowned performance coach Robbie Cannon, who delivered an insightful talk on Mastering the Mental and Physical Pillars of Golf Success. His advice on mental resilience and physical conditioning offered valuable tools to help us further develop our golf game. Hopefully, these insights will inspire us to reach new heights in 2025!

Our Junior Club thrived in 2024, under the leadership of our junior Conveners. We now have strong membership levels for both Junior Boys and Girls, with our Cadet membership surpassing 100, and over 30% of our juniors being girls. We’ve seen some excellent talent emerge, with this year’s Leinster Trophy Team composed entirely of Junior Boys, representing Skerries GC in their first adult Golf Ireland Inter-Club Competition. Our thanks to Jim Mc Donnell (Boys Junior Convenor), Gavan Farrell (cadets), and everyone who helped.

On the course, the greens and fairways have been in superb condition, thanks to Michael Calvey and his greenkeeping team. Despite challenges from climate change and chemical restrictions, Skerries has maintained its position as the highest-scoring club on Carr’s profile.

Thank you to our Club Professional, Bobby, for your support throughout the year. Thanks also to Mizan and his team. We encourage members to enjoy the Christmas Menu in the clubhouse with family and friends over the festive season.

As we look forward to 2025, we are confident that we will continue to build on the successes of this year. With exciting plans already underway, there’s so much to anticipate in the coming season. We would like to wish Michael Weldon and Deirdre O’Neill a fantastic year, as they take over the Captaincy reins from us in 2025.

Finally, we wish you all a Merry Christmas. May the New Year bring health, happiness, and, of course, great golf!

 Yours In Golf,

Stan & Elaine.
